Got a fresh new sketch book today and the first thing I decided to doodle is a lil bit of the mountainside village that is home to one of my D&D characters. It's not the best but I like it.
Gonna try and start drawing a little every day, I've fallen a bit out of practice, aside from embroidery stuff. .
The most crucial part of drawing a portrait is getting the proportions right. It takes a lot of practice and patience to learn drawing the face structure and yes, you can't achieve perfection in it, you can only get better.⠀
So here is a breakdown of the process
Determine the height and width of the face, you can use your pencil to measure it from the ref. picture or if you are good at it, simply eye judgement can work for you.
Draw the outer shape of the head ( the largest shape) Determine the hairline.
Step 2 :
Draw the central vertical line (use the top part of the nose as a reference) divide the the line into 3 equal parts (first line will determine the hairline, the second line determines the top of the brow, third determines the nose and the fourth line determines the chin.)
Start blocking in shadows, i prefer using only straight lines (strokes) keep it light, and don't be afraid to make mistakes
NOTE: Focus only on the large shapes, detailing isn't your concern for now
Start placing the facial elements. Remember, you'd not always be right, you gotta do it by using some trial and error and yeah patience is your best friend. Again don't focus on the details, don't go ahead until you are happy with your work.
Start filling in the details, don't go too dark, cos mistakes are very hard to determine when you are drawing continuously. I prefer taking atleast a 5 min break before I begin with the details. .
Even after following through the steps you might find a lot of stuff going wrong. It takes a lot of patience as i said, and it's not easy to get it right. I'll make another tutorial on how to spot mistakes and correct them.
Mastering this takes a lot of time, so dw if you think you suck at it, just don't proceed your drawing unless you have got the structure right. I remember spending many hours just drawing the proportions. This what I drew took me less than 15 minutes, and i think that this progress came in after drawing a lot. So good luck, ik you can do it.
If you appreciate my effort, please share this post and tag your friends in the comments.☺️
