These are the top 5 moves that have helped me to gain the strength and balance I needed in order to unlock the handstand push-up.
1️⃣Handstand Hold-You need to master this because it is the foundation of the move itself. Focus on keeping the core tight with hips and spine in neutral position. Your arms should be fully locked out. You should be able to hold a handstand for 30 seconds before moving on to the next skill.
2️⃣Pike Pushups-These will help you to gain the strength you need in order to perform the handstand push-up. To make this exercise more challenging elevate the legs to add more stress and weight on shoulders. You should be able to perform 20 pike pushups before moving on to the next move.
3️⃣Handstand Push-up against wall. Your butt should be facing away from the wall which forces you to maintain a neutral spine throughout movement. We don’t want your back to create and excessive arch aka the banana back. To avoid this, squeeze core and glutes. Once you can perform 10 handstand push-ups you can move on to the next progression.
4️⃣Knee Tuck Handstand Kick-This movement starts to combined balance and strength. It’s important again to keep core tight through entire movement. This will get you use to shifting the weight of your hips through the starting position. Once you can perform 10 successfully, it’s time to move on to the final progression.
5️⃣Handstand Press-This is the most difficult progression of the 5 and is essential for getting the handstand push-up. The goal is to keep legs straight and maintain a neutral spine as you lift legs up and press with your shoulders. If you can successfully hit 10 handstand presses in a row then you should be ready for a handstand push-up.
