Movie Review Holiday Special #10: Rob Letterman's Detective Pikachu
I honestly just wanted to get this review over with. I am a fan of Pokémon, mainly because it's nostalgic for me and they are adorable. I finished Pokemon Sword in like seven days. But, this movie is definitely NOT a favorite of mine. I mean, everyone went to see it to witness the Pokemon, obviously. And they delivered, with Ryan Reynolds playing Pikachu... Which is kinda weird but I don't mind it. The Pokémon looked great, with good CGI and voice actors. But the story is so mediocre and boring. I feel like it couldve been more creative. Psyduck was the only aspect/character of the movie that I genuinely liked because Psyduck is so awkward and cute. Kind of mad that Axew wasn't in the film, though.
Rating: 6.9/10 Adorable Axews
POKEMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU (2019)
Detective Pikachu is definitely one of the better video game adaptations of the film world!
While it may be predictable, the film manages to keep you watching thanks to the super cute Pikachu voiced by the fantastic Ryan Reynolds who's quick witted lines and passionate VO keeps you smiling right through.
The other reason would be down to actually seeing the Pokemon themselves live on screen. They look amazing and I really hope they bring on a couple more Pokemon movies with the same standard!
While not perfect nor overly gripping, Detective Pikachu still delivers and is quite an enjoyable film overall - no matter what age... Rating - 😁😁😁🤔 #moviemisfit#pokemon#detectivepikachu#ryanreynolds#filmreview#moviereview#action#actionfilm#comedy#family#film#movies#hollywood#filmcommunity
Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) dir. Rob Letterman
I have... some mixed emotions regarding this movie. While the CGI is quite good and the world building is fantastic, the over-dedication to the storyline kills the experience of watching. They should have focused more on making this world/city of Pokémon come to life rather than the ridiculous narrative of the boy’s missing father who (spoiler alert) TURNS OUT TO BE PIKACHU THE WHOLE TIMe. WTF. Absolutely bonkers and totally unnecessary drama for this type of movie. Also when Pikachu was comedically hit by a tiny rock and then they turned it into a super melodramatic near-death... I literally couldn’t tell if I was supposed to take it seriously or not. I do appreciate, however, how it almost serves as a sequel to the first Pokémon movie in some ways (Er, rather, it acknowledges the story of the first Pokémon movie in its use of Mewtwo). Still, it’s an enjoyable movie with solid animation and good world building. It’s just.... so silly.
Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the Stream! We still have a long way to go, so if you would like to see me dye my hair one of these crazy colors, we are $50 short of hitting our first milestone!
